1. Educational & Informational Purpose Only
Because payroll calculations, overtime multipliers, and tax withholding directly impact your income ("Your Money or Your Life" / YMYL), we maintain complete transparency regarding what our software does and does not do. WorkHoursCalculator.app is an independent mathematical estimation utility. Nothing on this website or inside our mobile application constitutes formal legal representation, tax preparation advice, or an official determination by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL).
2. Key Variables That May Affect Your Actual Paycheck
While our calculator models standard federal (FLSA) and California statutory rules with high precision, your employer's lawful gross pay calculation may differ due to:
- Employer-Defined Workweek Start Times: Under 29 CFR § 778.105, an employer's official 168-hour (7-consecutive-day) workweek may begin on any day of the week and at any hour of the day. If your employer's workweek starts on Sunday at 12:00 AM rather than Monday, your 40-hour overtime threshold will reset on Sunday.
- Weighted Average Overtime on Multiple Rates / Shift Differentials: Under FLSA rules, when an employee earns shift differentials or works at two different hourly rates in the same workweek, overtime is calculated using the regular rate of pay (weighted average) for that week.
- Alternative Workweek Schedules (AWS) & Healthcare 8/80 Rules: Certain California workplaces with validly adopted 4/10 or 3/12 Alternative Workweek Schedules, or hospitals operating under the FLSA "8 and 80" system (29 CFR § 778.601), follow specialized overtime thresholds.
- Bona Fide Meal Periods: Under 29 CFR § 785.19, unpaid meal breaks must typically last at least 30 uninterrupted minutes. Short rest breaks (5 to 20 minutes) are considered compensable working time under federal law.
3. Tax & FICA Withholding Estimates
The Est. Tax + FICA Deduction selector in our calculator provides a rapid percentage approximation (e.g., 7.65% statutory FICA for Social Security and Medicare, or 15%–26% combined federal/state withholding). Actual W-2 tax withholding depends on your IRS Form W-4 filing status, pre-tax 401(k)/health insurance deductions, year-to-date wage base caps, and local municipal taxes.
4. Official Government Resources for Wage Claims
